Mobile Communications and Standards glossary

With a whole new array of terms and definitions being used in the mobile and wireless communications environment, it’s easy to get confused. Starting this month, we will cover some of the terms you are sure to come across when dealing with Mobile Communications.
GSM
Global System for Mobile Communications. A standard for digital cellular communications (in the process of being) adopted by over 60 countries.

GPRS
General Packet Radio Service. An ‘always-on’ data service (eg for Internet access) using packet switching rather than circuit switching. It is an evolution of and compatible with most current GSM and is regarded a second generation plus (2G+) mobile technology

EDGE
Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution. An enhanced modulation technique designed to increase network capacity and data rates in GSM networks. EDGE should provide data rates up to 384 Kbps. EDGE will let operators without a 3G license to compete with 3G networks offering similar data services.

VPN
Virtual Private Network. A technology that establishes a private or secure network connection within a public network, such as the Internet.

APN
Access Point Name. The point where a mobile device can enter an IP network. Most ISPs offers a public APN, letting all customers access the internet, and private APNs for direct access to a company LAN.

NAT
Network Address Translation (Also known as IP masquerading). Enables organizations to present themselves to the Internet with one IP address. NAT converts the IP address of each LAN node into one IP address for the Internet (and vice versa).
