In an automated manufacturing process, manufactured units are often transported on conveyors, and can be weighed, counted or information can be collected by scanning barcode data. The sensing devices employed for this task typically communicate serial data in RS232 format or RS485 over longer distances. Serial data cannot be transported on networks in its original state and effective data communication is therefore very limited.
The Multenet solution
To achieve higher levels of processing, control and dissemination of information; it should be possible to transport the data over a network. This can only happen once the serial data has been converted to a network protocol.

A protocol converter will encapsulate the serial data and convert it into TCP/IP data packets, thereby network enabling the sensors and making the data available on the Ethernet for further integration or transmission on the internet.
The PocketPAD4 (PROD0107) has 4 serial interfaces. In an application where multiple devices need to be networked, this product assures a low per port cost and in addition offers various mounting options suited to a processing environment. A tried and tested code stack to deploy efficient protocol conversion; combined with an ARM9 processor assure low latency. This configuration represents the perfect choice.
