Electricity distribution substations owned by power utilities are distributed far and wide geographically as determined by grid distribution parameters. Substation equipment such as meters, protection relays etc need to be monitored to ensure system reliability and a stable grid. When a malfunction occurs, this needs to be detected to avoid a technician having to travel to the remote substation to attend to the defect.
The Multenet solution
To detect malfunctions remotely, substation equipment needs to be network enabled. This way equipment can be monitored remotely and equipment status can easily be determined.

A device server deployed as a dialup server will facilitate remote access to the substation network on demand. This will allow remote monitoring of protection relays. This in turn will add to operating efficiency and reduce operating costs by eliminating unnecessary callouts.
The EtherPAD Duo (PROD0201), supports full modem control on both serial ports. Since the Duo also supports PPP and port forwarding, one can use a PSTN or GSM modem with the Duo set up a PPP connection between two networks. Using legacy serial software loaded on their PC and deploying the Multenet Serial Anywhere com port redirector software, technicians can diagnose and adjust settings on protection relays. In a nutshell therefore, a simple and effective remote monitoring solution.
