Printing from Serial Device to Network Printer

Printing tasks from a number of serial devices to a printer is quite a common requirement. To install a printer at each such device will work but is not an economical solution. Capital expenditure would be way in excess of the optimum and each printer would have to be supplied, serviced and maintained.

The Multenet solution

A Multenet customer has a number of flow computers (Emerson S600) these units deliver the printing output via a serial interface. By serial device networking these flow computers could all share the existing network printer.

Network Printing from serial devices

This would obviate the need to install a printer for each flow computer and introduce considerable savings in both capital and operating costs.

A new feature on the PocketPAD range of products includes the ability to disconnect a TCP/IP socket to a remote host once an idle timeout occurs. This translates to your serial device sending printable data to a network printer. Other thin clients on the LAN will not be disrupted from their printing. The PocketPAD4 (PROD0107), was deployed in this instance, due to its powerful multiple serial device networking capabilities.
