With the introduction of modern TCP/IP based Hitachi process controllers, Iscor were faced with the problem of interfacing these Ethernet controllers with the synchronous serial interfaces of the legacy Burroughs system.
The Multenet solution
The equipment change requires that the synchronous serial devices be interfaced with a TCP/IP Ethernet network. Iscor control engineers were made aware that the Multenet EtherPAD would convert the TCP/IP data to asynchronous serial data and that they would be required to implement a synchronous to asynchronous converter in conjunction with the EtherPAD.

An implementation that converts serial data seamlessly into TCP/IP will restore the process capability to full efficiency, a solution regularly implemented by Multenet Technologies.
Iscor engineers built up their own hardware to convert synchronous serial data into asynchronous data that was then streamed into the TCP/IP Multenet EtherPAD. In effect a Telnet style TCP connection was established to the EtherPAD Duo (PROD0201) that can then communicate directly over the network with the process computer, a typical legacy device networking solution the company has provided for many years.
